an Advanced Scene Work - Improv Drop-In Workshop
UNITE and "FORM VOLTRON"
Every Performer of Color has at one time or many, been the “token.” But even in a group of friends, being out numbered can affect our play. We may find ourselves more in our head as we worry about how we are supposed to perform and/or whom we represent. We might second-guess our own instincts and sense of humor, because we think we have to improvise like them. Or worse: sometimes we can be named or “gifted” with stereotypes, by improvisers who can’t see past our racial appearances. This class aims to balance the playing field, and thus, SAVE THE GALAXY. In this sector of space, you will not be outnumbered. Lions of Color can feel free to play the way they want to play, explore the characters they want to explore, and not worry about being lost in translation, and risk being told they’re not PC. Plus, students will be given tools to respond creatively to on-stage marginalization. The best comedians draw from all of their experiences to find that genuine and original voice. Explore that voice - Get out of your head - Be a better improviser. If you are BLACK, BROWN, ASIAN, or in some other way NOT CAUCASION, this academy is for you. Because there are no white lions in Voltron. (See pic) |

RECOMMENDED REQUIREMENTS
The Academy is open to Performers of Color of every level of experience. However, this is NOT AN INTRO to improv class. This is an advanced level workshop, meaning that it is recommended students have at least 2 levels of long-form improv training from any improv program. |
The Mission: (or, a less-funny explanation)
Providing a space wherein performers of color are guaranteed to not be the token in the room. This Academy's only purpose is to empower performers of color. This workshop will serve as an incubator; allowing diverse talent the chance to develop characters, and preforming techniques specific to their racial/ethnic backgrounds. The Caucasian majority has historically dictated what kinds of language, humor and character depictions are politically correct, and therefore socially acceptable. This workshop is a safe environment where performers of color who want to question and push that status quo, can do so without the of fear of scrutiny from a majority presence and influence. Restricting Caucasian participation in this workshop is not discriminatory. This is a specialty group, in the same spirit of a college student union: this Academy exists to promote activities of common interest, as well as cultural and educational benefits. I LOVE WHITE PEOPLE; my Mom is one, and she’s the tops! She’s not allowed to enlist in this Academy. |
